Arnold Djunbiya didgeridoo (yidaki) solo

This is Arnold Djunbiya Marika, at the time of recording a 16 year old genius! Arnold has met the Australian Prime Minister in Canberra, played in numerous ceremonies in Arnhem Land, and is one heck of a yidaki player! Forgive me for the background noise… planes flying overhead, passing traffic, you can even hear a wind chime in there somewhere. But as I’ve learnt, never let an opportunity pass you by. Arnold is oozing in talent, he is young, his health is good, he is as fit as a fiddle. Just listen to him blast that yidaki! Hey, it is almost 4 am here, I better get some shut eye… if I can think of more things to fill in the description, I’ll do so tomorrow. Enjoy!

Elijah Nabegeyo didgeridoo in key of B, from Mamardawerre

I did not know that overtone-present didgeridoo accompaniment was to be found in parts of Western Arnhem Land until Darryl Digarrnga of White Cockatoo fame told me about it. And here’s an example of such an instrument from Mamardawerre outstation, near Oenpelli in Western Arnhem Land. I collected this instrument myself whilst in Arnhem Land and was immediately taken by the impressive artwork in ochre. I’ve seen similar designs on bark before by preeminent Aboriginal artists from the region and never imagined that a didgeridoo would be decorated in such a stunning manner. I got a mate of mine, Djulukpirri, to play this gorgeous instrument for me, to demonstrate how it is supposed to be played.

Quincey Matjaki Wunungmurra, among the best didgeridoo playing you’ll hear in the world!

With Marrilaga so much on our minds recently, I’ve neglected to recognise the sheer brilliance of his older brother Quincey Matjaki. Listen to this. Listen to it again. And again. You’ll learn from this. See how Matjaki plays with time, his ability to twist and turn with it, his use of negative space… this is absolute yirdaki genius and I don’t use the word lightly. The syncopations are just out of this world! Now, the question I don’t like to ask… who is better? Marrilaga or Matjaki?!? Can anyone out there match this? Or even come close to it? Please post video responses if you reckon you can play syncopations like this or if you know someone who can.

CCat plays Cassowary Didgeridoo Rhythm

I don’t play too much trad style, but when I do I reach for this stick. “Cassowary” is a large, flightless bird found in Northern Australia, and this rhythm is based on the scratching and pecking of the bird as it forages for food… Jeremy Donovan shared “Cassowary” with students at a workshop last year during the 2007 JT Festival… thank you Jeremy!
